The
Diocesan Library of Majorca has its origin in the Episcopal Library created by
the bishop Juan Diaz de la Guerra in 1775, by order of king Felipe V
(1771). The new library was located in room of the Episcopal Palace.
Archduke Lluís Salvador, in "Die Balearen", registers 5,069 volumes
printed, of which 35 were incunables, but no manuscript. This bottom was moved
to the new building of the Seminary, built in the outskirts of Palma by the
bishop Joan Hervàs Benet at the beginning of the 50's in 20th century, and it
was united with the rest of bibliographical bottom of the library of the
Seminary. The 3rd of October in 1972, Mons. Teodor Úbeda, then apostolic
administrator bishop of Majorca, created the General Library Diocesan and charged
it to the rector of the Diocesan Seminary. Finally, the 31st of December 2001,
Mons. Teodor Úbeda erected the ecclesiastical public Foundation of the
Diocesan Library of Majorca, an independent organism with a Patronage
and a director as person in charge. The Dr Manuel Bauçà Ochogavía was in
charge to transfer all the bibliographical bottom from the New Seminary to the
House of the Church in Palma and began to unify the files. The new library was
inaugurated by the Emm. and Rvm. Mr. Cardenal Jorge M. Mejía, librarian and
archivist of Holy Roman Church, the 21st of June 2002.
